Order an ImageIn April 1975, shortly before the end of the Vietnam War, several thousand Vietnamese children were brought to the US to be adopted. Many found foster families in the greater Seattle area.
Some of the children in the program were biracial, with one American parent. This was the case for Lê Quốc Thân, whose Vietnamese mother took him to the Holt Adoption Center in Saigon so he could go to the US. Thân would stay in Renton, WA, with foster parents George and Willa Mathison, until permanently adopted. In the meantime, the active 9-year-old, who wanted to be called Bobby, enjoyed playing with the Mathison children. Here, he leaps off the porch of the Mathison home, while Holt social worker translator Tran Thi Thanh sits nearby.
