Artist George Tsutakawa (1910-1997) was born in Seattle and met his wife, Ayame Iwasa Tsutakawa (1924-2017) during World War II, when he was on furlough from serving in the U.S. Army and visiting his sister at the Tule Lake concentration camp in California. Tule Lake was one of ten large camps operated by the War Relocation Authority in which Japanese Americans were incarcerated during World War II. George and Ayame married in Seattle in January 1947 and had four children: Gerard, Mayumi, Deems, and Marcus. Ayame was active in many Japanese cultural activities; she supported the Ikebana Society, Kubota Garden, Seattle Asian Art Museum, and Wing Luke Asian Museum.
