In August 1971 three Soviet mayors, from Tashkent, Irkutsk and Sochi, visited Seattle on a promotional tour organized by Alaska Airlines. The mayors met with Seattle Mayor Wes Uhlman, who later proposed that Seattle and Tashkent establish the first United States-USSR sister city relationship. Seattle and Tashkent already had strong ties that began in 1961 between the University of Washington and academic institutions in Tashkent.
In this image a delegation from Seattle meets inTashkent with Mayor Vahid Kazimov (left). On the table in front of him is a letter signed by 42,000 Seattle residents as part of an effort called Target Seattle, which sponsored nine days of community discussions on Soviet life and U.S.-Soviet relations.
