Longview Timber Barons soccer team, January 1926
Order an ImageBusinessman Jack H. Kelly emigrated to the US from Canada in the early 1900s, setting up a plumbing business and starting up a local soccer team at every town he stopped in. In 1923, Kelly stopped in Longview, Washington, set up his business, and later started a soccer team. The Longview Timber Barons had their first organization meeting and practice in September 1925, with Kelly elected manager and coach. Though the team was technically the property of the Washington State Football Association, the Timber Barons were granted a special dispensation from the US Football Association to join the Portland Soccer League to spare them long travel times to games in Seattle. In 1927, the concession was waived for Washington State championships, in which the team competed. The Timber Barons went on win the Oregon State championship four times, and the Washington State championship once, in 1929.
