In this photo, Cynthia Wilson, left, and Jacqueline Lawson kneel near the grave of Black Civil War veteran Gilford Hervey at the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) cemetery in Seattle. The two genealogists had been researching Hervey since learning about graves of veterans of the United States Colored Troops at the G.A.R cemetery in a newspaper article the previous fall.

Jacqueline "Jackie" Lawson (1928-2021) was the first Black certified genealogist in the Pacific Northwest, co-founder of the Black Genealogy Research Group in Seattle, and a founder and Chair of the Collections Committee of the Black Heritage Society of Washington State, Inc.. Cynthia Wilson is a former co-chairwoman of the Black Genealogy Research Group in Seattle, and former member of the Board of Directors of the Black Heritage Society. As of 2023, she continues to research Black Civil War soldiers who came to Seattle.
