In early 2003, the U.S. intensified its military presence in the Persian Gulf in preparation for a potential invasion of Iraq. Throughout the weekend prior to the Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial holiday, many communities around the nation planned memorials and peace marches to recognize both events.
About 2,500 peace proponents in Seattle participated in a candlelight procession along Broadway in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. The demonstration began with an ecumenical prayer service at St. James Cathedral and ended two miles away at St. Mark's Cathedral. The procession was sponsored by the Church Council of Greater Seattle to honor Dr. King and advocate for a peaceful resolution to the Iraq crisis.
