In 2003 the Stillaguamish Tribe of Indians was facing high rates of unemployment, high school dropouts, teen pregnancy, alcoholism, and drug abuse. The tribe's Business Development Department began plans to build a casino on part of their traditional lands near Arlington and Stanwood, Washington. Despite some concern that it would lead to dispersal of the tribe, about 150 people were relocated from houses that were demolished to make way for the casino. The following year Angel of the Winds Casino Resort opened and has since significantly benefited the tribe, providing revenue, jobs, and funding for tribal programs, as well as contributing to the local community.

In this image, Larry Yanity, 10, of the Stillaguamish Tribe, walks to an after-school program past homes north of Arlington that were later torn down to make way for the casino.
