Order an ImageAdefua is a cultural education organization and dance troupe founded in 1985 by Afua Kouyate, commonly known as Mama Afua. Mama Afua, a Seattle native, started Adefua to teach people about African cultures and African dance. Currently (as of 2024), Adefua’s programs include “African Arts for All to See,” an educational program that travels to schools, the Youth and Family Empowerment Program, summer camps, and the Odunde Festival, a harvest festival originating with the Yoruba people of West Africa. Adefua also puts on annual dance performances at Seattle Center to celebrate Kwanzaa.
