Charles Mitchell became Chancellor of the Seattle Community Colleges District in 2003, after serving as president of Seattle Central Community College since 1987. During his term as president, the college was acknowledged in a Time Magazine “College of the Year” Award in 2001. Dr. Mitchell grew up in Seattle, graduating from Garfield High School and the University of Washington, and earning a master's degree at Seattle University and a doctorate in education from Brigham Young University. He was also well-known for his athletic careers at Garfield High School and the University of Washington, and with the Denver Broncos.

In this image taken in the Seattle Community College Districts boardroom, Dr. Mitchell and members of the Board of Trustees applaud the announcement of his promotion to the district's top job, a position he held until his retirement in 2008.
