On July 4, 2002, 311 migrants originating from 65 counries were sworn in as new US citizens at a naturalization ceremony at Seattle Center. Some chose to become citizens to secure their place in the US in the wake of immigration law changes after the 9/11 attacks in 2001, while others wanted citizenship in order to work for the government or wanted to celebrate being able to express their individuality.

This image shows Ying Shen Winkle from Taiwan celebrating after her swearing in.
