Norwegian Constitution Day, the official National Day of Norway, is celebrated each year on the 17th of May. The day, called "Syttende mai" in Norwegian, commemorates the 1814 signing of the Norwegian Constitution, declaring Norway an independent nation. The anniversary is celebrated annually with festivities in Norway and in Norwegian communities around the world. The events include a children's parade, music, games and family activities, food, and speeches.

Seventeenth of May celebrations have been held in Seattle as far back as 1889. The annual community celebration in the Ballard neighborhood started in 1974, and as of its 50th anniversary in 2024, the festivities in Seattle are considered the largest outside of Oslo and Bergen. Here, John Selle plays the trekspel (accordion) and Trygue Vjorndal waves the Norwegian flag in the 2002 Ballard 17th of May parade. The two men were representing the Christian organization Fremad Den Norske Kristelige Forening in the parade.
