Order an ImageOn August 24, 2001, Microsoft released its new Windows XP operating system to computer manufacturers. In an event on the lawn of the company's Redmond campus, with 350 programmers and their families present, the company distributed briefcases containing Windows XP CDs to representatives of the six largest PC makers in the US.
This image shows Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates (left) and Group Vice President Jim Allchin at the distribution event. Gates and Allchin hold up gold Windows XP CDs, and behind them are gold-tinted briefcases with copies of the XP CDs. Representatives from the six computer manufacturers each accepted a briefcase, then hopped on helicopters to Sea-Tac airport to return home, where their companies would immediately set to work on producing computers running Windows XP.
