Order an ImageIn 1974, the Masjid Al-Salaam opened in a small frame house at 3040 S. 150th St, in what is now the city of SeaTac, between Seattle and Tacoma. Worshipers included people from Somalia, Southeast Asia, Bosnia, Indonesia, and the Middle East. The Masjid, now also called the Islamic Center of Seattle, was the first mosque in Washington State.
Sometime in 2000, members of the mosque enclosed a carport to accommodate the growing congregation. SeaTac building officials began quarterly inspections of the mosque, saying that for safety reasons, occupancy should be limited to 50 worshippers rather than the 600 who attended regularly. Some neighbors also complained about parking issues. Masjid members considered this continuing attention to be harassment, and in August 2001, they invited the news media for a visit to explain their situation.
Following the discussion, a worship service was held in the yard of the mosque.
