Order an ImageJuneteenth is an annual holiday celebrating the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. Also know as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day, the holiday is celebrated on the June 19th anniversary of the day in 1865 when a Union Army general arrived in Galveston to announce the end of the Civil War and freedom from slavery in Texas, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect.
In 2001, a Juneteenth celebration was held at the Southeast Family Center at 7301 Beacon Ave. S. The event included food, music, and family-oriented activities. This photo shows a boy performing a dance for the crowd at the celebration.
