WTO protesters after tear-gassing, Seattle, November 30, 1999
Order an ImageThe Third Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO) was held in Seattle from November 30 to December 3, 1999. Trade ministers and other officials from the WTO's 135 member nations met in an unsuccessful attempt to plan negotiations to further deregulate free trade. Tens of thousands of activists for many causes gathered to protest what they saw as the WTO's favoring of corporate interests over social and environmental concerns.
Heavy police response included the use of riot gear, tear gas, pepper spray, and rubber bullets. Here, an activist wearing a First Aid armband treats a young woman for tear gas eye injuries while two photographers take pictures of the action. The group of protesters is blocked from the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Pike Street by a line of King County Sheriff’s Department members wearing gas masks and riot gear.
