Order an ImageIn September 1996, students at Crestwood Elementary began a campaign for Washington to name an official state insect. They narrowed their choices to the dragonfly, the ladybug, or the green lacewing, then sent ballots to 500 other elementary schools across Washington. The dragonfly decisively won, taking 15,000 of the 25,000 votes cast. After the state's children decided on the dragonfly, Crestwood students secured sponsors for a bill in the state legislature and went to Olympia to lobby for it. The bill passed, despite being initially tossed out by the state Senate.
