Order an ImageIn the 1990s, the Goosebumps horror books by R.L. Stine were among the most popular children's books in the US. The series was praised for holding young readers' attention all the way through, and one school librarian credited this to their structure: "Every chapter is a cliffhanger, so the kids want to read that next chapter." However, some adults found the subject matter disturbing or objectionable and advocated for their removal from school libraries.
In this image, Tyree Giles, 11, holds two of the Goosebumps books. A student at Bailey Gatzert Elementary, Giles was a fan of the series, but he reported that his mother "thinks it's disgusting."
