Shabbat Across America (SAA) is a program to introduce Jewish families who are not part of a synagogue to Shabbat, the Jewish weekly holy day of rest, which begins at sundown on Friday and lasts until sundown on Saturday. SAA was started in response to fears that more and more American Jews were disconnected from their heritage, with fewer than 10% of Jews in the US observing Shabbat. SAA events consist of prayers and songs followed by the traditional Shabbat meal. Newcomers are also welcomed to study the Hebrew language or the Torah.

Here, Ruth Younker (left) and Dalia Amon of Congregation Ezra Bessaroth prepare food for Shabbat Across America. Their congregation expected about 200 attendees to the Shabbat service and dinner.
