Order an ImageMSNBC, a partnership between Microsoft and NBC News, was launched on July 15, 1996 as both a 24-hour cable TV news channel and interactive Internet site. While ultimate editorial control over content was held by NBC, Microsoft also developed reporting staff at its Redmond headquarters to generate and report its own stories. Reporters based at Microsoft focused on world economics, particularly emerging markets, and the Internet and telecommunications.
Here Jerry Dyer, business editor of the MSNBC online newspaper, works in the expanding newsroom in Redmond shortly after the launch of MSNBC. Microsoft ultimately divested its stake in the MSNBC channel in 2005, and the website in 2012.
