The Domestic Partnership Registration Ordinance, passed in August 1994, offered unmarried couples in long-term committed relationships--including lesbians, gays and heterosexuals--an opportunity to document those relationships by registering a domestic partnership with the Seattle City Clerk's Office. Largely symbolic, the ordinance did not grant any benefits or legal obligations. Domestic Partnership registration is still (2017) offered by the City of Seattle.

September 6, 1994 was the first day to register a domestic partnership at the Municipal Building in Seattle. By 7:30 that morning, people were standing in line, and within the first hour, 60 couples had registered as domestic partners.
