Man protesting motorcycle helmet law, Kent, June 30, 1994
In this June 1994 photo from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Kent motorcyclist Gary Lyons expresses his opinion about Washington State’s helmet law, which had just been called into question by an appellate court. This was a period when mandatory helmet laws were hotly debated throughout the country. Washington State’s 1990 helmet law was opposed by riders who championed “freedom of choice” in helmet use. Here, Lyons' helmet sports a sticker reading "Helmet laws suck."
