Juneteenth is an annual holiday celebratiing the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. Also know as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day, the holiday is celebrated on the June 19th anniversary of the day in 1865 when a Union Army general arrived in Galveston to announce the end of the Civil War and freedom from slavery in Texas, nearly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect.

In 1994, a two-day Juneteenth celebration in Volunteer Park was organized by the Central Area Chamber of Commerce. The festivities included food, crafts, entertainment, dancing, and an awards ceremony honoring the achievements of student and community volunteers.
