REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) is a retail and outdoor recreation services corporation founded in Seattle by Lloyd and Mary Anderson in 1938. It is organized as a consumers' co-operative and sells sporting goods, camping gear, travel equipment, and clothing.

This photograph shows Fred Dielensnyder shopping for a backpack at the Capitol Hill REI store in 1993. The Capitol Hill store opened in 1963 and closed when the new flagship store opened the Cascade neighborhood in September 1996.
