Order an ImageOn November 8, 1994, about 100 unhoused people and their advocates sat on the sidewalks in Pioneer Square in protest of a new Seattle city ordinance banning sitting or lying on sidewalks. Advocates claimed the law violated the civil rights of unhoused people. Although the law was challenged in court, both state and federal appeals courts ruled it did not violate constitutional rights, and the State Supreme Court declined to hear the case. As of 2023, the Seattle law banning sitting or lying on sidewalks in downtown and neighboring commercial areas continues to be in effect.
