In 1993, Seattle University (SU) was included on a list of "100 Best Colleges for African-American Students." University officials were pleased with the inclusion but also acknowledged that SU could do much more. Several Black SU students also expressed ambivalent opinions about the University. They said SU provides a good education but complained of scarce Black faculty, suggested more aid for Black students who are unable to afford tuition, and said that SU was neither a hostile environment nor a notably welcoming one for Black students.

This image shows Seattle University senior Adenike Long, who grew up in Seattle and graduated from Garfield High School. Long chose SU because if offered her more financial aid than other schools, but commented that the school was "not a very social place, to me, for African Americans.''
