The Little Saigon neighborhood of Seattle is centered around 12th Avenue South and South Jackson Street at the eastern edge of the Chinatown - International District. The area has grown from a few businesses opened by Vietnamese immigrants in the late 1970s to become the social and economic hub of the Vietnamese-American community in the Puget Sound region.

In 1993, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer ran an in-depth article on Little Saigon's many businesses, with a particular focus on its restaurants and food markets. This photograph was taken at Viet Wah supermarket at the Asian Plaza shopping complex at 1035 Jackson Street. The store was opened by Duc Tran, who came to Seattle in 1976 as a refugee from the Vietnam War. In 1981 Duc opened a small grocery store, the first Viet-Wah, to bring familiar foods to the Vietnamese and Chinese communities.

This photo shows a woman shopping in the produce section of Viet Wah supermarket in 1993. The store is still in business in Seattle as of 2021, with a second location in Renton, WA since 2006.
