Kathleen L. Bishop Turner (1915-1978), a member of the Snohomish Tribe, was active in Native American affairs throughout her life, following in the footsteps of her father, Senator William Bishop, who was the first Native American to serve in the Washington State Legislature. She devoted most of her live to the preservation and promotion of Native American traditions and culture. In addition to serving as a judge for the Nisqually tribe, Kathleen Bishop Turner served on the Snohomish tribal council for 24 years, and in the 1970s co-authored the "Report on the Landless Tribes of Washington State."

This image shows Joseph Washington, a medicine man in the Lummi tribe, chanting a song during Kathleen Bishop's funeral, which was held on February 16, 1978 at Fort Worden State Park. Bishop's funeral included Indigenous traditions such as singing and presenting gifts to help her spirit complete its journey. Representatives from the Samish, Skokomish, Cowlitz, Puyallup, Lummi, and Upper Skagit tribes spoke at the funeral to honor Kathleen Bishop's life and work. After the funeral, Bishop's ashes were buried at Chimacum, where she was born.
