As more women joined the workforce, child care and after-school programs became increasingly important. In Redmond, Washington, Blazes Broiler owner Glen Jensen created a nursery in the daylight basement of his new restaurant so employees could bring their young children to work. Staffed by a nurse and several assistants, the nursery was, according to Jensen, the first arrangement of its kind in the state and a way to help retain employees long term.

Here, in the Blazes Broiler nursery, cocktail waitress Cindi Grube holds her son Bryan during one of her breaks. Ms. Grube is pleased with the nursery facilities. She works three hours a day and is delighted that she doesn’t need to take him elsewhere for day care.
