As more women joined the workforce, child care and after-school programs became increasingly important. In Redmond, Washington, Blazes Broiler owner Glen Jensen created a nursery in the daylight basement of his new restaurant so employees could bring their young children to work. Staffed by a trained nurse and several assistants, the nursery was, according to Jensen, the first arrangement of its kind in the state and a way to help retain employees long term.
