Painter Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000) was known for his portrayal of the African-American experience, using blacks and browns juxtaposed with vivid colors. Lawrence referred to his style as "dynamic cubism," though by his own account the primary influence was not so much French art as the shapes and colors of Harlem. Lawrence also taught, and spent 15 years as a professor at the University of Washington.

This photo shows Jacob Lawrence at the Seattle Art Museum. The occasion was a tribute to Lawrence on the last day of a month-long retrospective of his work at the museum. The painting behind him, "Study for the Munich Olympic Games Poster," was commissioned by the 1972 Olympics Committee in Munich and reproduced as silk-screen posters for sale at the games.
