Alberta Williams King (1904-1974) was an activist, organist, and the mother of martyred civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968). She organized and led the Ebenezer Women's Committee at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, where her husband and son were pastors, and was active in the NAACP, the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, and the YWCA. On Sunday, June 30, 1974, a gunman opened fire during a service at Ebenezer Baptist Church, killing Alberta King and Deacon Edward Boykin, and injuring a congregation member.

This image shows the congregation of Mount Zion Baptist Church during their service on Sunday, June 30, 1974. Many members of the church learned about the murder of Mrs. King when they arrived that day, which was also the date of the groundbreaking of Mount Zion's new sanctuary. During a short memorial, Rev. Samuel B. McKinney led prayers for the King family as well as for the killer.
