Order an ImageIn November 1973, amid an oil price shock, Washington's State Highway Commission lowered speed limits on highways and interstates to 50 miles per hour as part of an effort to conserve fuel. In this image, Sergeant LaVere Klewin of the state troopers cites a motorist for speeding on I-5 through Seattle. Klewin reported that most drivers were complying with the new speed limit and he let a few off with warning citations instead of the $15 ticket (about $110 in 2026 dollars).
