"Target 50" workers delivering voter registration cards, Seattle, July 14, 1972
Order an ImageThe City of Seattle launched the Target 50 voter registration drive in June 1972, with the goal of registering 50,000 new voters by the end of August. Funded by Model Cities and the Office of Human Resources Youth Division, the program recruited about 50 people aged 18-21 to spend the summer registering voters across the city. The project met its goal of 50,000 new registrants before September 1, signing up its 50,000 voter on August 19th.
Here, Target 50 workers Tom Williams, right, and Lizabeth Laigo hand Assistant King County Registrations Coordinator Jim Weeks some of the 4,300 new voter registration cards collected by the project that week. The project had registered over 21,000 new Seattle voters so far, and a total of 52,123 new registrants were signed up by the Target 50 team in time for the primary election in September.
