This image shows the opening of a parking lot on King Street at 8th Avenue S. in the Chinatown - International District. The lot is located beneath an elevated section of I-5 and was leased to the International District Improvement Association (InterIm). InterIm hoped the lot would generate profit to reinvest in the community. As of 2025, the lot is still operated by InterIm. Here, Lieutenant Governor John Cherberg holds scissors for the ceremonial ribbon cutting, City Councilman Liem Tuai is to Cherberg's right (with glasses), and Miss Seattle-Tacoma Sue Lee is to Tuai's right (behind gong). The ceremony included a gong and drum, visible in the foreground, and a Chinese lion, in the background. Chinese youth groups also set off celebratory firecrackers.
