When Jamie Williams was born one second past midnight on the opening day of Seattle’s 1962 World’s Fair, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer named her “Seattle’s Century 21 Baby.” On April 21, 1983, Jamie’s 21st birthday, Seattle Center invited her back for a gala birthday dinner at the Space Needle restaurant. She and her mother also toured the Seattle Center grounds with “Spacie” and “the Wheedle,” mascots of the Center and Space Needle.

Spacie the Needle was created by Brian Keil when he entered an "International Mascot Contest" promoted by the Seattle Mariners baseball team and held in the Kingdome in 1979. This 12-foot tall ensemble consisted of a Space Needle headpiece, white Mariners jersey and long white pants, and 4-foot stilts, making it one of the tallest costumes in the mascot world. After winning the mascot contest, Spacie proceeded to entertain fans at various venues throughout the 1980s including Mariners games, Seafair parades, local celebrations, festivals, as well as charity and children's events. Keil donated the headpiece of the Spacie costume to MOHAI in June 2023.
