The Turf Grill and Smoke Shop opened in Seattle in the 1920s at 1407 Third Avenue. In addition to food, it sold beer and wine, cigars and cigarettes, and also had a barber shop. The Turf moved to Second and Pike in 1984 when 3rd Avenue was closed for the building of the Bus Tunnel (now the Transit Tunnel). In 2012 owner Greg Rosas changed the menu, raised the prices, and changed the name to Ludi's.

In this image supporters of "Save the Turf Restaurant" congregate in front of the restaurant to march down to the office of developer Richard Clotfelter of The Pacific Group, who planned to demolish the building. Housing activists were also protesting the demolition, which would displace the Post Office Grocery and tenants of the Glenn Hotel located in the same building. Longtime community activist Bob Santos can be seen in front, with glasses and light scarf and pants.
