Peter Canlis opened his landmark Seattle restaurant in 1950 at the south end of the Aurora Bridge in a building designed by Roland Terry with sweeping views of Lake Union. Recipient of many awards and still operated by the Canlis family, the restaurant has maintained a reputation as one of Seattle's finest dining establishments.

In this image Canlis Manager Rudy Valiani checks wine in the new wine cellar. Born in London, Rodolfo Arturo Valiani (1925-2014) previously worked for Peter Canlis at his first restaurant in Waikiki, Hawaii, which opened in 1947. Rudy and wife Carol's son, Marc Valiani (1963-2011), was a celebrated chef who credited his dad for sparking his love of cooking.
