Order an ImageThe Pike Place Market's 66th-anniversary celebration was held in Seattle August 17-18, 1973. Bluegrass, jazz, and jug bands provided live music, and featured activities included children's arts and crafts booths, Soap Box Derby Races, and 66-cent sales at many shops and stalls within the market.
In this image Alice Mary (Cooper) Signey (1923-1999) is presented with the grand prize for best sculpted vegetable display by Mayor Wes Uhlman (b. 1935) on the first day of the celebration. Fondly known as 'The Berry Lady' of the market, Ms. Signey was born in the Kent Valley to Belgian immigrants and was selling produce grown on the family farm by age seven. She took pride in her produce displays and was adept at carving vegetables such as beets and rutabagas to resemble rose bouquets, encouraging customers to take a closer look; what didn't sell at her stall each day went to food banks.
