Order an ImageBetween 1971 and 2008 the Pike Place Merchants Association hosted an annual Memorial Day street festival at the Pike Place Market. Proceeds from the festival went to the Pike Place Market Foundation to help improve the market.
In this image the Gypsy Gyppo String Band plays "old-time stuff" for a crowd at the 1973 Pike Place Market Street Fair. The band was active throughout the 1970s, and is credited with bringing a contemporary sensibility to the Seattle square dance and contra dance scene. Members of the band included Bob Naess, Armin Barnett, and Jack Link on fiddles; Warren Argo on banjo; Jerry Mitchell on mandolin; and Sandy Bradley on guitar.
