During the summer of 1985 the Pike Place Market Foundation held a competition in which local artists submitted designs for a piggy-bank sculpture that would collect spare change from Pike Place Market visitors to help support the market's food bank, child-care center, clinic, and senior center.

In this image, Anna Focke, a Pike Place Market Foundation board member and one of three judges in the competition, reviews proposed piggy bank designs on display at Design Concern, 1427 Western Avenue. The winning sculpture was created by Georgia Gerber (b. 1955) of Whidbey Island, who name her creation Rachel after a real 750-pound pig who won the 1985 Island County Fair. Set into place in 1986 under the iconic "Public Market Center" sign and clock, Rachel has become a beloved icon of the market and to date (as of 2019) has raised more than $200,000. She was also the inspiration behind the “Pigs on Parade” fundraiser throughout downtown Seattle in 2001 and again in 2007 for the Market’s centennial celebration.
