Order an ImageSeattle's vibrant Chinatown - International District neighborhood hosts an annual celebration of the Chinese, or Lunar, New Year, featuring traditional dragon and lion dances, Japanese Taiko Drumming, martial arts, and other cultural performances. The Chinese lion dance is performed in costume on big occasions to bring good luck, and is accompanied by beating drums, clashing cymbals, and resounding gongs.
In this image, a photographer standing in the doorway of the Great Wall Hotel takes a picture of a member of the Seattle Chinese Young Men's Club dancing in a lion costume, while the man next to him holds out an offering for the lion. This dance was performed on January 1, in recognition of the start of the Gregorian, or western, New Year.
