In this image, New York-based fur brokers Phillip Brenner, left, and Rolf Harf inspect pelts at the Seattle Fur Exchange, a celebrated fur auction house established in 1898 as a store where gold miners could barter wild Alaskan furs for supplies such as food, clothes, and tools. Still based in the Seattle area, the company was consolidated in the late 1980s under American Legend Auctions.
