Begun in 1889 by Thea Foss (1857-1927) in Tacoma, Washington, the Foss Launch and Tug Company (now Foss Maritime) has grown into the largest tug and towing concern on the west coast. The company has been owned since 1987 by Saltchuk Resources Inc., and is now based in Seattle.

In this image Foss Co. Dispatcher Walt Hedwall, seated, and Assistant Manager Sid Campbell, use the company's new high-frequency radio setup for a call to Captain Noel Davis aboard the tug Foss 18 (see image 2000.107.173.01.02) .
