Order an ImageThe Seattle Nichiren Buddhist Church was formed in 1914 in the Nichiren Shu lineage of Buddhism by a devout group of immigrants from Japan. Since 1929 the church has been located in Seattle's Chinatown - International District neighborhood, at 1042 South Weller Street.
In this image dignitaries participate in events celebrating the 50th anniversary of the church. At left is a minister of the church, Reverend Kaishun Nishigaya. Seated behind him is Archbishop Nichijo Fujii of Japan, leader of the Nichiren Sect. The other men are members of a delegation of bishops and Buddhist ministers in town to celebrate the anniversary.
