In 1984 sixty customers of Peoples Bank began a one-year trial of the bank's experimental new home-banking system. For a $7.50 monthly fee and a charge for each transaction, the customers could pay bills, transfer funds, check account balances, and even play a few video games on a home banking system available 24 hours a day, using their home computers. The bank monitored the customers throughout the year to streamline future use of the system. Ultimately the pilot program met with mixed results. Bank officials said they weren't sure there were enough interested customers to justify a bank-wide electronic system, and that the options offered by the Automatic Data Processing system they used weren't geared to the Seattle market.
