Port queens at Port of Embarkation anniversary celebration, July 28, 1955

Order an Image
The Seattle Port of Embarkation marked its 13th anniversary by having an outdoor party with about 600 guests at the Port's headquarters near Pier 37. It was also the 13th anniversary of the Transportation Corps in Seattle, and Mayor Allan Pomeroy proclaimed the day as "Transportation Corps Day." Thirty-two Seafair queen candidates were introduced to the guests, and one, Helen Rae Erickson, was crowned Miss S.E.P.E. Transportation Corps. Four other girls were honored with titles related to transportation media: Miss Air, Miss Rail, Miss Highway and Miss Harborcraft. All of the port queens were daughters of port employees, and all were 13 years old, in keeping with the 13th anniversary theme.

This photo shows the five port queens seated in a BelAir convertible at the 13th anniversary celebration. Seated at rear are Helen Rae Erickson, Shannon Close, and Kathryn Bowden; Janet Haralson is in the middle; and Barbara Doree in the front.
