Jim Pomeroy, motocross champion, Seattle, December 31, 1973
Off-road motorcycle racing on natural terrain had started in Europe in the 1920s and gradually became popular in the US as well. In April 1973, Yakima native Jim Pomeroy became the first American to win a European Grand Prix motocross motorcycle championship. By the end of the year, he was the first American to lead the World Championship sports list.
Here, Jim Pomeroy stands with his Spanish-made Bultaco off-road motocross motorcycle. He and a dozen other athletes had just been nominated for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer’s Man of the Year award.
