After the Vietnam War ended in April 1975 with the fall of South Vietnam to North Vietnamese communist forces, many thousands of people from Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos fled violence and persecution in their home countries and sought refuge in the United States and elsewhere.

This image shows a family of refugees in their apartment shortly after arriving in Seattle. Hanh Nguyen (far left) assisted Giu Vo, her brother Chinh Vo, her husband Sen Thanh Tran, and their children Nga, Hoa, Tai, and Quyen with their move to Seattle. The family was in a refugee camp in the Philippines, then ended up in Texas before coming to Seattle with Nguyen's help. Nguyen, not related to the family, arrived in the US in 1973, converted to Christianity, and trained as a Baptist minister. She worked at the Beverly Park Baptist Church providing interpretation for Vietnamese church members, conducting services in Vietnamese, and providing physical, financial, and spiritual aid to newly arrived refugees.
