On September 4, 1957, Little Rock Central High School became the focus of national attention when the governor of Arkansas deployed the Arkansas National Guard to prevent nine Black students from entering the school, in direct opposition to court-ordered integration. Three weeks later President Eisenhower ordered the National Guard to enforce integration of the school. The Guard remained at Central High School until May 8, 1958.

In this image, taken the same month as the Little Rock crisis, a Black student helps a younger white student across the street; both were students at Madrona Elementary School in Seattle's Central Area. On a caption typed on the back of the photo, the photographer notes that the woman in the car was angry about integration in schools.
