Father John Lynch leading marchers to St. James Cathedral, Seattle, March 16, 1965
Order an ImageOn March 16, 1965, Father John Lynch, moderator of the Seattle Catholic Interracial Council, led 400 people from the federal courthouse to St. James Cathedral in a demonstration of sympathy for Black Americans in the civil rights struggle. Over 1000 people then joined Lynch in a "Mass of Reparation" at the cathedral, where he delivered an "angry sermon on love."
This photo shows Father Lynch, bullhorn in hand, on the steps of St. James Cathedral, after leading marchers from the U.S. Courthouse. The demonstration was sponsored by the Seattle Catholic Interracial Council.
